Mommy and Me Yoga [5 Amazing Benefits for Mom & Baby!]

There are three things that are really hard to balance as a mom; one on one bonding time with your little one, exercising in a way that provides self-care and hanging out with other mamas in the same phase of life. Well, there is one way to get all of these things done at once. Head to mommy and me yoga! Trust me, you do not have to be a yogi to attend one of these classes. They are seriously fun and even better, so beneficial for both you and your baby.

What to Expect at Mommy and Me Yoga

Don’t be intimidated! Mommy and Me Yoga is going to be different than any other yoga class you have been to. And of course, your baby does not have to be perfectly behaved to fit in. No one will judge you for feeding or changing your baby in the middle of class, either. These classes usually focus mostly on stretching and are themed with fun, upbeat music. A little baby will spend the yoga session in your arms, but usually, once they can walk or crawl you will put them down next to you. As far as a time frame, you can expect to be there anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes just like most normal yoga classes.

Safety Precautions

The yoga instructors that run mommy and me classes are trained professionals (as long as you find a reputable studio). They know what is safe for you and your baby and exactly how to make the experience beneficial for you both. However, start gently and don’t feel like you need to push yourself too hard. It is not recommended to start until your baby can hold their head up without help, but every studio has different guidelines. You may also want to run the idea past your doctor.

Finding a Mommy and Me Yoga Class

These classes are pretty common these days, and finding a studio may be as easy as googling “Mommy and Me Yoga near me”. The YMCA often offers Mommy and Me options, so you can also start by checking there!

At one of these classes, you will find the poses are geared specifically to heal mamas. You will gain core strength as well as work your pelvic floor muscles. Help Your Baby Develop Motor and Sensory Skills

Heading to Mommy and Me Yoga with your baby isn’t just beneficial for you. They will actually get a lot out of it, too. Many experts are in agreement that getting your baby moving a bit will help them in the long run. It is also beneficial for them to experience a new environment like the yoga studio.

Leave with a Happier Baby (who sleeps & eats better!)

Baby yoga can help with digestion and getting your little one down to sleep. When you practice any knees to chest pose, you are helping to relieve any constipation or gas. As for easier sleep, there is no real proof but getting your baby out and about on top of moving around usually helps.

Speed Up Your Morning Routine with Kids with These 13 Phrases!

Do you know what I dislike the most about being a parent? Getting everyone out the door in the morning. There are so many things to think about breakfast, teeth brushing, lunches, getting everything in backpacks, and sometimes even triple-checking that your 12-year-old did in fact put clean underwear on today. Of course, we want our kids to be clean and have everything they need before we send them out the door, but I also want to instill responsibility and a strong sense of self-care in my kiddos. I’ve started repeating these 13 key phrases to my kids that speed up our morning routine and help them get out the door. After all, I think we could all use a little extra encouragement in the morning.

13 phrases to speed up your morning routine with kids

Speed up your morning routine with kids with these 13 phrases!

  1. “Give every day the chance to be the most beautiful day of your life.” Mark Twain
  2. “Your day is pretty much formed by how you spend your first hour. Check your thoughts, attitude, and heart.”
  3. “One kind word can change someone’s entire day.”
  4. “Lose an hour in the morning and you will spend all day looking for it.”
  5. “It’s a good day to have a good day!”
  6. “Wake up with purpose.”
  7. “Lovely days don’t just come to you, you should walk to them.”
  8. “Start every day with an attitude of gratitude!”
  9. “Set a goal that makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning.” (we say this in the morning, but it is also a great one to remind your kiddos of before bed)
  10. “Each morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most.” Buddha
  11. “Be the best version of yourself.”
  12. “Good vibes only.” (super simple, but it’s my way of squashing any bickering or negativity which slow everything down)
  13. “Anything’s possible if you’ve got enough nerve.” J.K. Rowling

How We Established a Morning Routine

Above, I mentioned that mornings are one of my least favorite things about parenting. However, recently I decided we all needed to get out the door on a better foot. Of course, the 13 phrases above definitely helped to speed up the morning routine but I started implementing some real rules for the kids as well. Below you will find some of the things we do around here to have a better morning.

Stricter Bedtimes

Huh, who would have thought getting more sleep would make for easy mornings? I know so many of you are probably thinking DUH. Here’s the thing though, we did have set bedtimes before. They just varied a little bit and flexed depending on what our day looked like. We have made it a goal to be way more consistent with bedtime and implemented a nighttime routine as well to help with this.

13 phrases to speed up your morning routine with kids

This new strict bedtime applies to mom & dad as well. Rather than staying up late, try to wake up a little earlier. You might need some of the 13 phrases above to help speed up your own morning routine at first, but eventually, it will become habit. I found that I am not very productive when I stay up too long after the kids go to bed anyways. I just watch TV or scroll through my phone. However, when I wake up early I can actually get some things done, like throwing in the laundry or cleaning up. Also, you can make your coffee and maybe even grab a bite to eat before the kids are awake. It will make your own morning feel so much less chaotic.

Making Breakfast

I had to let go of the idea of being this perfect mom who got up every morning and made breakfast for the kids. To be honest, it wasn’t really working out how I pictured it anyways and was adding a lot of stress. Now I am pre-making breakfasts like egg bites and letting the kids have a lot more freedom in what they grab to eat in the morning. I will even occasionally stock up on things like Pop-Tart Bites, which is one way to put a smile on all the kiddos’ faces!

I printed out a sheet with options for what they can make themselves, things like avocado toast or microwavable breakfast burritos. For the older kiddos, I listed out what they need to make certain smoothies or acai bowls and they have done great with making them for themselves!

Packing Lunches

Do it the night before! Stop scrolling through Instagram and give yourself 30 minutes to put lunches together. You will thank yourself in the morning. Here’s an article that might just make you feel a little better about the lunches you pack!

If you have elementary-aged kiddos, have them help you as well. It is good to teach them what goes into making their lunch and you can help them learn healthy habits along the way.

Picking an Outfit

Who knew a 5-year-old could be so picky about their outfit? Whether you choose the clothes or your little one picks out their own outfit, coming to an agreement of what they will wear the night before works out so nicely. Then, you can have it all laid out and ready for them to grab and put on in the morning without questions.

Parenting has taught me that checklists are a necessity. Turns out having checklists for the morning routine completely changed how we operate. Best of all, I don’t feel like I am repeating myself every single day anymore because I can just tell them to read the checklist. I’ve printed these out and put them in the bathroom and by the door as reminders.

Morning Routine Checklist Example

  • Brush Teeth
  • Wash Face
  • Do Your Hair
  • Get Dressed in the Clothes Laid Out for You
  • Eat Breakfast (You Can Make Yourself Anything from the Breakfast List)
  • Get School Supplies Ready To Go
  • Put Your Lunch in Your Backpack
  • Put on Shoes

Invest in Some Cubbies

These don’t have to be something that stays in your home forever, but while you have young children it is really nice to have a go-to spot for all things school-related. Even if you don’t want to do cubbies, have a designated spot for each child. They can keep their shoes, backpack, lunchbox, and anything else they need for school each day in one spot.

These cubbies are a great spot to post some of the 13 phrases that you have picked out to speed up your morning routine! I love these cubbies from Kohl’s because they are simple but have all the space your kiddo needs.

Weekend Morning Routines

Obviously, you should all relax on the weekends but try to keep a similar morning routine. This will help prevent Monday morning from feeling so hard and eliminate having to readjust every week. You can move wake up times back and switch things up to make a nice breakfast, but make sure everyone still completes everything on the usual checklist.

With these 13 phrases to speed up your morning routine and some tips for yours truly, I hope you are able to find your perfect morning routine for your kids and leave the house a little happier. Every mama deserves to have a calm, smoothly run morning.

If you have any tips or tricks that help your family in the morning, please share them in the comments! We would love to hear from you.

How to Make a Milk Baby Bath + All the Benefits

Breast milk is full of valuable nutrients for your baby. Babies who are breastfed receive almost innumerable benefits concerning healthy growth and development. But many moms don’t realize that you can use breastmilk externally as well. Breast milk baths can help to treat and prevent cradle cap, eczema, diaper rash and moisturize your baby’s skin. Read on for how to add a little “liquid gold” to your baby’s bath.

baby milk bath

The Benefits of a Breast Milk Bath for Your Baby

Breastmilk for Moisture

Breastmilk contains a few different types of acids that soothe and heal baby’s soft and tender skin. Oleic acid is an omega fatty acid that is found in human tissue. This acid is essential to moisturizing and preventing the effects of aging. Palmitic acid, a saturated fatty acid, is another intense moisturizer. Linoleic and vaccenic acid are two additional acids found in breastmilk. Linoleic acid soothes inflammation, calms spots, and provides hydration. Vaccenic acid nourishes and protects against the harsh conditions outside the womb.

A Milk Bath Can Treat Baby Acne

Breastmilk baths can help to heal red spots and acne. Acne is common in babies as they receive some fluctuating hormones from their mother when they nurse and have remaining hormones in their blood. Lauric acid, which is in both in breastmilk and coconut oil, is an antibacterial agent. A few drops of breastmilk in the bath can help reduce acne breakouts and clear red spots and discoloration.

Breastmilk to Heal Minor Irritations

Babies can be further soothed by breastmilk baths when they are suffering from minor burns, cuts, or insect bites. Immunoglobin-A, a component of breastmilk, helps to stave off infections by fighting bacteria. If your baby has irritation or itchiness from insect bites or minor scratches a breastmilk bath is a healing and soothing home remedy.

Breastmilk to Soothe Diaper Rash

Bacteria and yeast on babies skin can also cause diaper rash. The antibacterial properties and soothing acids of breastmilk can calm inflamed and painful skin. The addition of breastmilk to a bath will promote healing and calm irritation.

A Milk Bath Can Prevent and Treat Cradle Cap, Psoriasis, and Eczema in Your Baby

Skin problems can be quite common in babies. Some frequent issues include cradle cap, psoriasis, and eczema.

Cradle cap…

is essentially the result of an overproduction of sebum, or your skin’s natural oils. This buildup of sebum results in crusty and oil patches, commonly on the scalp. It can present as yellowish or brownish scales on the head. It doesn’t require medical treatment and isn’t harmful to your baby, even if a little itchy and unsightly.

isn’t prevalent in babies but has been known to develop in their diaper area. Psoriasis is a buildup of skin cells. This results in scaly and thick patches. The symptoms of psoriasis are cracked and dry skin with some bleeding as well as itching and burning.

is yet another skin condition babies get that can be treated with a breast milk bath. It is somewhat common in children and babies. Many parents do confuse it with other skin conditions like cradle cap, though. Eczema is spots or patches of rough, scaly, and red skin. It is typically itchy or minorly painful. You will usually find it in the creases of your baby’s skin including the creases of their joints or between skin folds. Unlike cradle cap which is the buildup of sebum, eczema is caused by the production of too few natural skin moisturizers resulting in dry skin.

Many parents swear by the use of breastmilk baths to soothe these skin conditions. However, there is no scientific research or evidence behind this. You should still get an evaluation and treatment from your pediatrician if your baby has a rash that worries you. In the meantime though, for relief at home, a breastmilk bath could be the answer. The components in breastmilk can provide moisture and healing. Nourishing and calming cracked skin. They can also work to break up the collection of sebum and skin cells relieving itching.

How to Make a Milk Bath for Your Baby

To provide the highest concentration of breastmilk you should use an infant-sized baby bathtub instead of a full-sized bathtub. We love The First Years Sure Comfort Newborn to Toddler Baby Bath Tub for infants and the Boon Naked Collapsible Baby Bathtub for toddlers!

baby milk bath

Step 1

Fill the bath with warm water, testing it on your inner wrist to make sure it is not too hot or too cold. Once you have an adequate amount of warm water for a bath add the breastmilk.

Add about 180ml to 300ml of breastmilk, or about 6 to 10 ounces. The milk can have been previously refrigerated or frozen or even freshly expressed. However, you should make sure it is warm prior to adding it to the bath.

Step 2

Pour in the milk and stir the bath with your hand until the water appears milky and whitish. Place the baby in the bath and bathe as usual. Be sure to pour the water gently over babies arms and neck. Slowly and carefully pouring the water on your baby’s scalp can assist with cradle cap. Use a washcloth to dab the milk bath on your baby’s face, paying close attention to their cheeks.

Step 3

Breastmilk is a valuable substance and creating a breastmilk bath uses quite a few ounces. If expired milk is not spoiled, but past the date in which you can safely feed it to your baby, you can consider using it for a breastmilk bath. Breastmilk can only last in the refrigerator for three to five days and in the freezer for six months or less. If your breastmilk has passed its expiration date and is not foul-smelling, chunky, or moldy it should be safe to use in a bath.

If you produce excess milk or pump additional milk to prevent engorgement save it! You can then use it for a breastmilk bath.

Breastmilk can be nourishing and soothing for babies. It is full of essential nutrients and acids that moisturize and heal babies’ skin. Giving your baby a breastmilk bath can prevent and calm a variety of skin ailments, keeping your little one’s skin baby-soft.

Building Girls Up by Using These 10 Phrases

Daughters bring joy into our lives, but it takes a lot of work and responsibility to nurture a relationship with them.  While girls are believed to be sugar and spice and everything nice, they are not necessarily born that way. Mutual respect has to be taught and modeled at a young age so that mother and daughter can feel that they belong together in their relationship and as a leader in the world.

Strong women of all ages need to feel empowered. Mothers can build up their daughters so that they can:

  • Develop a voice
  • Have confidence in themselves
  • Stand up in the beliefs they feel strongly in
  • Nurture the feeling of power
  • Love themselves for who they are
  • Trust their instincts
  • Follow their dreams
  • Say no with conviction and not waver
  • Be respectful yet strong in the face of injustice
  • Be ok with vulnerability
  • Take care of themselves in times of stress and chaos
  • Believe that there is good in everyone
  • Be aware of the feelings of others, use empathy as a guide
  • Give compassion freely
  • Follow the path of the life they choose with confidence

Empower Girls

Empower Girls By Saying Statements Like These

1. “I love you no matter what.”

You love your daughter unconditionally, so be sure to show that every day. Do not make it conditional by using love and its examples as a motivator for good behavior. Things like “if you are good today, I will read you an extra book tonight” or “be a good girl and do the right things today”. Making mistakes is human and everyone has days that do not go so smooth. Show them your love and allow them to learn from those mistakes.

2. “You are beautiful, inside and out.”

Beauty is subjective, and the world is full of messages about what beauty is and is not. But these expressions of beauty only highlight what shows on the outside. You can tell your daughter “Your hair is beautiful today. I can tell that you brushed it well”, but it fails to remind her of true beauty that comes from within. Beauty also includes confidence, kindness, compassion, and optimism. It is a glow that radiates from women. Female role models that represent deep beauty on the inside and outside through their big hearts and good deeds are great
examples. JoJo Siwa, for example, may be a megastar with her bright wardrobes and big bows, but she also inspires young girls to follow their dreams with courage and confidence.

Empower Girls

3. “You got this! I’m here when you need me.”

Problem solving is a life skill that everyone needs, especially young girls. For example, school is about figuring out academics as well as social nuances. Other children are working on establishing their power and role in the social hierarchy, which can come with some conflict. While it is easy for a mother to intervene, either directly with the other child or indirectly through the teacher or parent, it is important to empower a girl to solve her own problems. You can have her brainstorm ideas that can help her find some resolution, but your support and feedback will boost her courage and know that she is not alone in the situation.

4. “How are you feeling?”

Processing and expressing feelings can be challenging for many, but it is an important part in developing emotional literacy, agility, and strength. By thoroughly feeling and communicating your own emotions, your daughter will come to understand that there is no right or wrong because everyone has to navigate them. Identifying and understanding emotions can set them on the path to understanding them and how to feel better when strong emotions bring them down. Sadness, anger, and hurt are all feelings that we ALL experience. Rather than say “everything is going to be ok” every time she is feeling down, listen to what she has to say and empower her to solve her problems. Model how you deal with emotions. Do you take a walk when you are stressed? If she likes to ride her bike, remind her how she feels when she rides around the block a few times.

5. “I love my _____ (body part)! What is your favorite part of your body?”

Body image puts a lot of pressure on young girls. Sometimes mothers and other female role models express negative messages about bodies like “I need to lose this muffin top” or “These arms are so jiggly”. Teach girls to focus on one thing that they love about their bodies. You can say things like “I love my strong legs. They help me to jump high and run fast and I’m proud of the muscles I’ve worked so hard to build.” Guide them to find something they love about themselves and keep that first in their mind.

6. “Really? What happened then?”

Mothers often love to share their own recommendations and solutions, but sometimes it is time to be more of a listener. This enables your daughter to use their voice and express themselves. You may be tempted to interject with advice such as “You should try this…”, but you may miss hearing about what she has already tried or the opportunity to allow her to discover her own answer. When you allow your daughter to express herself, you let her learn to trust her voice, communicate effectively, and open up more. When she needs your help, she will know that you are ready to listen and will come to you more freely.

Empower Girls

7. “How can you turn this situation to be more positive?”

No one wants to raise “the mean girl”. However, friendships and social interactions can flip flop from positive to negative in an emotional minute. Instead of correcting your daughter with negative terms like “mean” or “bad”, focus on her better qualities that make her stronger in these trying times. Peaceful problem solving will become second-nature when it comes around again later.

8. “It is good that you want to feel powerful.”

A strong-willed girl is a gift, but it can come across as bossy. When it becomes especially trying, you may get exasperated and say things that diminish her feelings of empowerment. Rather than say things like “Stop being so bossy!” or “What is wrong with you? I am the parent so why do you have to challenge me?”, teach her that her strong desire to lead is healthy. She just needs to learn how to lead with integrity

She needs to be reminded that it is important to express your feelings and interests with respect to others. For example, when she tries to get her friends to play a game with her, she needs to ask them if they want to play a certain way, rather than give them orders. Respect for others and their interests can turn into strong leadership skills if they are modeled and mentored in a positive way.

9. “How will you be the change that you want in this situation?”

When things seem unfair, your daughter may express her concern and complain. This can be bullying at school or a problem in the community or family. Where you may see an inability toward change, your daughter has the opportunity to be the voice or vision toward making a positive difference. She may be the influence when you support her by guiding her to come up with ideas that are respectful and kind while developing her character and self-esteem.

10. “I’m not okay with that.”

When your daughter is doing something that you don’t want her to, does she stop when you say, “STOP IT NOW!”? Often times, the answer is no. She may not see the problem with whatever she is doing. The way you express your emotions and desires is a model to how she can do the same without blaming others or shaming them. Using “I” statements such as “I don’t like it when you ____” gives you the chance to calmly express yourself. “I don’t like it when you leave the door open while the air conditioning is on. I need you to close the door every time you go in and out so that the house stays cool.” This enables them to understand what the problem is and how they can cooperate rather than just telling them what you don’t want.
